Ultrasun

Sun Protection for Your Face and Body

If most sunscreens leave your skin feeling heavy or irritated, Ultrasun is worth a try. The formulas are light, and many leave out perfume and emulsifiers. Most come in SPF 30 or SPF 50+, so you can focus on finding the right one for your face or body.

About Ultrasun

How to Choose an Ultrasun Sunscreen

Start with where it's going. Face sunscreens are lighter, and some do a little more, like adding a tint or targeting dark spots. For your body, the Family and Sports formulas come in bigger bottles that last longer on holiday. If you burn easily or you're heading somewhere very sunny, the Extreme SPF 50+ is worth a look.

Getting the Most From Your Sunscreen

Apply it 15 to 30 minutes before you go out, and use more than you think you need. Reapply after swimming or towel drying. Ultrasun also makes aftersun and a lip balm with SPF, so you can look after your skin before and after a day outside.

Protect Your Skin From UV Rays With Ultrasun

Using SPF is an important part of your everyday skincare routine all year round. Ultrasun's Head of Education, Adele O'Donoghue, talks to us about the wide range of sun protection they offer for every skin type and every skin tone.

Ultrasun Face Sunscreen in SPF 30 and SPF 50+

You can choose between SPF 30 and SPF 50+ for your face. Ultrasun says the SPF 30 also helps reduce the look of fine lines and uneven skin tone, so it does a little more than a basic sunscreen.

Want colour? The Face Tinted comes in one universal Honey shade. The Anti-Pigmentation Face is made to lighten dark spots and works as a makeup primer too. If you're already wearing makeup, the Face & Scalp Mist goes over the top without any rubbing in.

Ultrasun Tan Activators With SPF 30 and SPF 50

Ultrasun's tan activators are sunscreens first. They add Bronzyl, which Ultrasun says speeds up tanning by around 40% over ten days, though you still need to be out in the sun for any colour to show.

Choose the Body Tan Activator SPF 30, or the SPF 50 Spray if you'd like a clear gel you can use on your face too. The Pre Sun Tan Activator works differently. You start it twice a day, two weeks before your holiday, then keep using it to make your tan last. It isn't a sunscreen, so you'll still need your SPF.

Ultrasun Family and Sports Sunscreens in Big Bottles

The Family SPF 30 400ml is the Ultrasun customers buy most. It's water resistant, fast absorbing and suitable for all skin types, so one bottle covers everyone.

Spending the day outdoors? The Sports Gel is a clear, non-greasy gel that sinks in quickly, and it comes in SPFs from 20 to 50. If you'd rather spray, there's the Sports Spray in SPF 30 and SPF 50.

Expert Tip for Ultrasun

"Most of us put on far less sunscreen than we need. For your face and neck, aim for about two finger lengths. Apply it 15 to 30 minutes before you head out, as Ultrasun recommends, so it has time to settle, and reapply after swimming or towel drying. Don't forget your lips and the back of your neck. Sunscreen goes on as the last step of your skincare, and before makeup."

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I choose Ultrasun SPF 30 or SPF 50?

Either gives you strong protection. SPF 30 filters out roughly 97% of UVB rays and SPF 50 roughly 98%, so the gap is smaller than the numbers suggest. Go for SPF 50 if you burn easily or you'll be in strong sun for long stretches. SPF 30 is fine for everyday use and shorter days out. Whichever you pick, how much you apply and how often you reapply matter more.

Which Ultrasun sunscreen is best for the face?

Ultrasun Face is the place to start, in SPF 30 or SPF 50+. Choose the Face Tinted if you'd like a little colour, or the Anti-Pigmentation Face if dark spots are the concern. You can also protect the thin skin around your eyes with Ultrasun Eye Protection SPF 30.

Is Ultrasun a mineral sunscreen?

Ultrasun Mineral Face SPF 50 and Mineral Baby SPF 50 are the two sold as mineral sunscreens. Both are described as 100% natural and are EcoCert and Cosmos Natural certified, and the Face one is described as leaving no white cast. Not every Ultrasun is mineral, so check the product page if that's what you're after.

How do I use the Ultrasun Face & Scalp Mist?

Apply it to clean, dry skin 15 to 30 minutes before you go out. Close your eyes and mouth, hold the bottle at least 15cm away and spray generously and evenly across your face. You can spray it onto your parting and hairline too. It's touch dry within a few seconds, so it's easy to top up over makeup.

What does Ultrasun Tan Activator do?

It's a sunscreen with a tan enhancer called Bronzyl added, which helps your skin tan more quickly. It won't give you colour without sun, so it isn't a self tan. Apply it in the shade 15 to 30 minutes before sun exposure. If you want colour without the sun, try our gradual tanning lotions.

What's the difference between Ultrasun Family and Extreme?

Family is the everyday option for the whole household. It's mostly SPF 30 and comes in sizes up to 400ml. Extreme is SPF 50+, made for long spells in strong sun and for skin that's sensitive to the sun's rays, and it's suitable for very pale skin in particular. Both are water resistant.

Does Ultrasun help with pigmentation?

Sunscreen is the most important step, because UV exposure can make dark spots darker. Ultrasun also makes anti-pigmentation formulas for the face. The Anti-Pigmentation Face SPF 50+ contains Illumiscin and Asyntra SL, which Ultrasun says help lighten dark spots and stop new ones forming. The Photo Age Control Fluid Anti Pigmentation SPF50 is made to brighten and even out skin tone, and Ultrasun reports visible results in as little as 14 days.

Which Ultrasun is best for children?

Ultrasun Kids SPF 50+ is made for children from 3 years, and it's water resistant and suitable for sensitive skin. For babies, Ultrasun Mineral Baby SPF 50 is made for babies and really sensitive skin. Babies under six months should be kept out of direct sun, so speak to your GP or health visitor if you're unsure.
