Top 5 Face Oils For Skin Health

For those with acne and blemish prone skin, face oils have long been a no-go. Perceived as potentially being a ticket to a breakout, the thinking behind not using a face oil if you already have oily/breakout prone skin is understandable. However, face oils arenât as scary as you think! When used correctly, they can be fantastic for balancing the skin while restoring hydration and glow.
Read on to learn why you shouldnât be afraid of facial oils, a top tip from our skin expert Kimberley on face oils for different skin types and our top 5 oils to add to your routine!
Why Should You Use A Face Oil?
Utilising face oils them as a part of your routine can increase hydration thanks to their emollient and occlusive properties, but what does this mean? When we speak about a product being emollient or occlusive, this refers to:
- An emollient s a substance that soothes and smooths dry and flaky skin that is created by a lack of water in the skin. The emollient is able to fill open cells with lipids to keep the skin hydrated and smooth.
- Occlusives are an ingredient that stops moisture and water from leaving the skin by creating a waterproof coating on the skin.
To sum up, emollients and occlusives are amazing for locking hydration into the skin if youâre lacking moisture. However, this doesnât mean that face oils will only work for you if you have dry skin.
Which Face Oil Should You Use?
For each skin type, Â you may require a different type of oil. Our Skin Expert Kimberley says: âThe most important thing about a face oil is picking the right one for your skin. If you have combination skin, go for a light oil like squalene. If you have dry or dehydrated skin, opt for richer oils like jojoba or marula for extra nourishment. A few drops go a long way, so pat it on as the last step in your routine or mix it with your moisturiser for a dewy boost. The best part? Your skin wakes up feeling soft, smooth, and seriously pampered."

Oily/Acne Prone Skin
For oily and acne prone skin, the trick is to ensure your skin is hydrated but not overloaded with heavy product. The best face oil for oily skin and acne prone skin would be an ingredient like squalane, as it is lightweight, absorbs quickly and is non-comedogenic. We love the Omorovicza Queen Oil. It is nutrient rich and fast absorbing while also being super hydrating and offering plenty of skincare benefits thanks to ingredients like raspberry seed & prickly pear oils, five-flavour berry and alfalfa extract. Â
Combination Skin
Rosehip oil for the face is fantastic, especially for combination skin. It rich in fatty acids to hydrate and strengthen the skin barrier without irritating or causing breakouts. One of our favourite rosehip oils is the Pai Skincare Rosehip BioRegenerate Oil. This innovative oil is formulated with supercritical CO2 rosehip seed and fruit extract to prevent skin damage and lock in moisture.
Dry Skin
If youâre on the drier side, an oil with jojoba in it will revive thirsty skin. This because jojobaâs pH level is almost identical to the oil our skin naturally produces to balance the skin, sebum. This means that jojoba oil is less likely to cause breakouts and clog pores because of its natural quality. A great hydrating face oil option is the Gleamin Supernutrient Oil â although super lightweight, this oil nourishes and smooths the skin with a blend of jojoba, cloudberry and pumpkin seed peptides.
